Café Rivense is a micromill in Costa Rica’s Chirripó region, founded in 2005 by Regulo Ureña and Isabel Rojas. Their sons—Ricardo, Mario, Esteban, and Luis—are dedicated stewards of the family farm, working together to produce exceptional coffees. Nestled in the lush, mountainous terrain of Chirripó, their farm is a shining example of sustainable agriculture.

One of their standout farms, La Fila, operates with sustainability at its core. Practices such as shade management enrich the soil and keep coffee trees healthy, while annual soil analyses guide thoughtful fertilization. Minimal herbicide use and the preservation of water sources reflect their commitment to environmental responsibility. Scattered fruit trees provide sustenance for wildlife, fostering biodiversity across the farm.

The Ureña family has perfected every step of the coffee production process, from handpicking ripe cherries to processing, dry milling, and independently managing exports. This hands-on approach ensures every bean reflects their dedication to quality and care.

In 2023, we had the privilege of meeting the Ureña family in Richmond. This is our second year sourcing from Costa Rica, and knowing we’ll enjoy these incredible coffees year after year is a thrill.
